Rip up to create

Have you ever been punished in childhood for accidentally ripping up you Dad's favorite newspaper or Mom's magazine ? it's not a crime any more! It's design and even more. It is art.
Recently, a collage technique became popular among both amateurs and professional artists. You don't need painting skills and large expenditures on materials, but only the imagination and the desire to create. The Design Mood, made a selection of several collage artists who show how diverse this technique can be.

1. An editor from Moscow Savva Saveliev rips up his newspapers to create the series of portrait of Russian and world known politicians. Do you recognize those faces?

2. Derek Gores is an artist from New York. Inspired by Gustav Klimt, Egon Schiele and Max Ernst, he amazingly combines natural beauty of the figure together with angular design . He worked as a designer and illustrator for such big names as Lenny Kravitz, Lucasfilm, Kings of Leon, U2, Adidas, Madonna, Harley Davidson, 321 Agency, Van Halen, the National Football League, LiveNation, Love Haight Apparel, JCPenney and more...
Derek about his works: "... in most I'm trusting randomness to help build an end result more interesting than I could have planned".

I don't think there is something to add. Just enjoy the view...
Derek gives workshops in Brevard Art Museum, you can check out the nearest date on his web-site or contact him personally, he'll definitely appreciate it :)

3. In contrast with the hand made there are also lots of computer made collages. For sure you've seen the following portrait of Steve Jobs made out of his Apple gadgets. Geeky one!
The technique became quite popular and found it implementation even in business. For instance, the TIME's 2010 Person of the Year Mark Zuckerberg picture made using icons from Facebook, was published on the cover of the magazine. Amazing, isn't it?

And of course there much more...
...as those made of flags and twitter birds...
... or the world map out of post stamps and butterfly out of hundreds of butterflies.

If you want to experiment yourself with collaging you can just use some free software such as Artensoft Photo Mosaic Wizard for for creating mosaics or Artensoft Photo Collage Maker for Photo collages.

Wish you creative mood for designing and good luck! :)
