Rip up to create

Have you ever been punished in childhood for accidentally ripping up you Dad's favorite newspaper or Mom's magazine ? it's not a crime any more! It's design and even more. It is art.
Recently, a collage technique became popular among both amateurs and professional artists. You don't need painting skills and large expenditures on materials, but only the imagination and the desire to create. The Design Mood, made a selection of several collage artists who show how diverse this technique can be.

1. An editor from Moscow Savva Saveliev rips up his newspapers to create the series of portrait of Russian and world known politicians. Do you recognize those faces?

2. Derek Gores is an artist from New York. Inspired by Gustav Klimt, Egon Schiele and Max Ernst, he amazingly combines natural beauty of the figure together with angular design . He worked as a designer and illustrator for such big names as Lenny Kravitz, Lucasfilm, Kings of Leon, U2, Adidas, Madonna, Harley Davidson, 321 Agency, Van Halen, the National Football League, LiveNation, Love Haight Apparel, JCPenney and more...
Derek about his works: "... in most I'm trusting randomness to help build an end result more interesting than I could have planned".

I don't think there is something to add. Just enjoy the view...
Derek gives workshops in Brevard Art Museum, you can check out the nearest date on his web-site or contact him personally, he'll definitely appreciate it :)

3. In contrast with the hand made there are also lots of computer made collages. For sure you've seen the following portrait of Steve Jobs made out of his Apple gadgets. Geeky one!
The technique became quite popular and found it implementation even in business. For instance, the TIME's 2010 Person of the Year Mark Zuckerberg picture made using icons from Facebook, was published on the cover of the magazine. Amazing, isn't it?

And of course there much more...
...as those made of flags and twitter birds...
... or the world map out of post stamps and butterfly out of hundreds of butterflies.

If you want to experiment yourself with collaging you can just use some free software such as Artensoft Photo Mosaic Wizard for for creating mosaics or Artensoft Photo Collage Maker for Photo collages.

Wish you creative mood for designing and good luck! :)

The Emotional Design on the Wall

Nikita Nomers, Russia-based graffiti artist, has definitely taken the emotional design to another level with his latest creation 'The Living Wall'.

He painted emotions, such as joy, excitement, and anger onto walls of buildings, houses, and pretty much other surfaces available around the city of Nizhny Novgorod. Read some more to check out the portraits and videos!

The emotions are very realistically projected we think up to the point where it kinda bring some sort of chills when you look at it ;-)

For more portraits, click here

On the video below, you can actually see how Nomers created his recent paintings "The Fire in the Eyes"

Which wall's emotions do you like the most? Share with us!

The Look and Feel of Typography

What is one of the essential parts of a good design, which contains writings? Of course it is the font or in broader sense (and fancier term) the 'typography'. Typography is basically the combination of font, size, spacing, and color. So the million dollar question is : can typography really define the mood? Let's have a closer look at the interesting examples to get inspired!

The design group from Behance network created 18 new fonts (from ornamentation to the graphics in the style of post-modern-art 20-30s). We chose few which impressed us the most.

More inspiration here: fontfabric.com

Don't be afraid to experiment with fonts and even to invent new font types. For example German designer Jose Ernesto Rodriguez (José Ernesto Rodriguez) with Spanish roots, living in Berlin designed his own Handmade font (Handschrift). For creation of any sign or letter of the alphabet, he used a photocopy of their fingers and hands, made by copymachine. This guy definitely made it easier for police to get him ;-)

No doubt that the company which has succeded with font related design is Google with its Google Doodles. Google has posted more than 1000 doodles over the last 10 years! Isn't that incredible?! Here are just few of their famous doodles. Take a look at how the same word changes it's "mood" from mistery to sentiment, from advertures to excitment due to diffeent design.

What is your favorite font and why?  Come share with us! :-)

Color Up Your Day!

Let's talk about colors today!

It is no secret that color is an inseparable element from design. Color is also often associated with mood and emotions - hence the phrase I'm feeling blue or green with envy. The correct use of colors could definitely enhance the message conveyed by your design. Check out this great infographic highlighting the psychology of color used in various occasions, such as interior design and advertising.

Some of the most interesting info and findings:
  • Yellow, Blue, and Red are 3 primary colors (check out the video below for specifics!)
  • Red is often associated with danger of failure and therefore could make you do poorly on exam or break up with your boy/girlfriend :-)
  • Purple is the royalty color (used by many kings for their pretentious robes)
  • In advertising, Green is the "fertile" color, Blue is great for business, and Red (be aware) is appetizing!
(click the infographic for bigger version)

Very much related to the subject, check out this awesome video by OK-Go for Sesame Street about the primary colors and their fun combination!

PS: What is your mood now? Share with us!
With -15 degree outside, I feel colorfully freezing today! :-) and Julia is childish happy after OK-Go video :)
